Judo in San Diego Since 1967
Judo is a modern martial art and Olympic sport that focuses on throws, pins, and submissions. It was founded in 1882 by Dr. Jigoro Kano in Japan as a way to train the mind and body through disciplined, cooperative practice.
At its core, judo means “the gentle way.” It’s not about brute strength, it’s about balance, timing, and efficiency. Through judo, you learn how to fall safely, move with confidence, and work with a partner in a respectful, structured environment.
At Unidos Judo Club in South Clairemont, we keep that original spirit alive. We welcome kids, teens, and adults of all experience levels, and we teach both traditional and competitive judo in a safe, inclusive setting.
Judo is more than just a martial art. It’s a powerful tool for building confidence, discipline, and physical fitness. Whether you're looking for a fun way to stay active, a safe sport for your kids, or a challenge that pushes you mentally and physically, judo offers something for everyone.

Understanding the Judo Belt System
In judo, progress is measured through colored belts. These ranks reflect not just skill, but also effort, attitude, and time spent learning on the mat.
At Unidos Judo Club, students move at their own pace, and our instructors help each person grow with confidence and integrity.
White → Yellow → Orange → Green → Blue → Purple → Brown
White → Yellow → Orange → Green → Brown → Black
Instructors evaluate technique, effort, attendance, and respect
When ready, students test for their next rank
All promotions are registered through the United States Judo Association (USJA)
Every belt earned represents growth, not just in skill, but in character and community.
Judo Competition: The Path to Ippon
In judo, competition (called shiai) is a chance to test your skills, timing, and composure, all in a spirit of mutual respect.
The goal is to earn an ippon, a full point that ends the match. This can be achieved by:
Executing a clean, powerful throw
Holding an opponent on the ground for 20 seconds
For advanced ranks: applying a submission through a joint lock or choke
We support students who want to compete, whether for fun, growth, or serious competition.
And we don’t just participate, we host.
Unidos Judo Club proudly hosts the Sensei Jesse Jones Memorial Tournament as part of the California State Games, held annually in San Diego. It’s a celebration of judo, community, and the legacy of our founder, drawing competitors from across the region.
Safety First, Always
Judo is one of the safest martial arts, but only when practiced with care, respect, and control. That’s why we emphasize safety from day one.
All students learn ukemi, the art of falling safely. This builds confidence and prevents injury during throws.
We focus on:
Controlled throws (no slamming)
Partner communication
Clean, secure mats
No jewelry or sharp nails
Clean gi and good hygiene
Our dojo culture is rooted in respect, discipline, and mutual support.
We bow when entering the mat. We thank our partners after every round. We help each other improve.
We also teach:
Jita-Kyoei — mutual benefit and welfare
Reigi — courtesy, etiquette, and humility
Teamwork and trust — because we grow together
Whether you're age 6 or 60, mat safety and mutual respect are the foundation of everything we do at Unidos.
